The government will give each household living in landslide-prone areas of the Bugisu sub-region Shs18 million to help them relocate to safer places.
The one-off payment is intended to help families buy land and establish homes away from areas at risk of landslides. Beneficiaries will be able to acquire land within Bugisu or in other parts of Uganda.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced the initiative on Wednesday during the launch of the programme in Namisindwa District, where she met ministers, Members of Parliament, technical officials and local government leaders from the sub-region.

Nabbanja said the financial support was part of the government’s wider resettlement programme, which has been running since 2010 to protect communities and their livelihoods from disasters.
“We launched the resettlement package initiative, under which households in landslide-prone areas in Bugisu sub-region will receive Shs18 million each as a one-off financial support, to facilitate their relocation from high-risk to safer areas,” Nabbanja said.
The programme is intended to help families move out of dangerous locations and settle in areas where they face a lower risk of landslides and other disasters.
However, the government has not yet provided details on the total number of households expected to benefit, the overall cost of the programme, the eligibility requirements or when the payments will be made.
