Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo will be smiling to the bank despite finishing 8th in the women’s 1500m final at the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Oregon, US.

At the ongoing event, a total of almost $8.5 million (about Shs32 billion) is available for athletes that manage to finish in the 8th position and below.

Nanyondo finished 8th in the women’s 1500m final and will walk away with $5000 (about Shs19 million).

Nanyondo was the first Ugandan in action at the Oregon event. She lined up in Heat 3, and finished 7th in Heat 3 with a time of 4:03.81, just outside the desired top 6 places but qualifying among the next fastest 6.

Earlier this week, she didn’t finish the semi-final after a nasty push by Italy’s Gaia Sabbatini. However, Gaia was disqualified, and Nanyondo was granted a place in the final.

Before the event, she was ranked 10th in the world.
