Uganda has been named as the host nation by Africa Rugby for the 2024 and 2025 editions of the Rugby Africa Cup.

The development was announced by the State Minister of Sports, Peter Ogwang, on Thursday.

“Africa Rugby has unanimously accepted Uganda’s bid to host the 2024 and 2025 editions of the Rugby Africa Cup at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole,” said Ogwang.

He mentioned that the current renovations at Namboole cater to several other sports disciplines, including rugby, and that Uganda is ready to start hosting both local and international games.

“To ensure readiness, this morning I inspected the rugby playing field at Namboole, together with the President of Uganda Rugby Union, Kayangwe Godwin. Thank you for pushing this bid,” said Ogwang.

The tournament was previously called the Africa Cup before it was renamed the Rugby Africa Cup in November 2019. Uganda is the current reigning Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Cup champion following their triumph over Zimbabwe in 2023.

Meanwhile, renovation works at Namboole Stadium are at 86%, according to the UPDF. At full completion, the stadium will reportedly seat 39,831 (general stand), 1,564 (VIP), and 286 (VVIP).
