With Uganda now fast preparing as one of the hosts for the forthcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, the National Council of Sports (NCS) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyambogo University to construct a state-of-the-art football facility, which will serve as a training ground for the two tournaments.

The project, which will cost Shs14.3 billion, is expected to be completed within five months. The UPDF Engineering Brigade has been contracted to do the construction, which will be done in two phases.

The first phase will include grading the facility, constructing perimeter fencing, dressing rooms, a drainage and water system, a power generator, and lavatories, along with the installation of floodlights. The second phase will add a VIP stand, medical room, administrative offices, and tennis and basketball courts.

The Kyambogo University training ground is one of the venues ear-marked for use in the CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027. Others within Kampala city will be in Mbuya, Makindye and Makerere University.

Uganda, along with Kenya and Tanzania, secured the rights to co-host the 2027 AFCON finals. The CHAN tournament will act as a precursor to the three countries’ collaborative hosting of the prestigious event.
