Joshua Cheptegei, the 27-year-old Ugandan distance runner, has long been a dominant force on the global stage, boasting an impressive collection of medals and records.

However, one title had eluded him – until now. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Cheptegei finally claimed the gold medal in the men’s 10,000m, a victory he had been longing for.

Overcome with emotion, Cheptegei described the feeling as indescribable. “I’ve wanted this for a long time,” he said, reflecting on his silver medal finish in Tokyo. “I wanted just to win the 10,000m.”

Cheptegei’s historic achievement on Friday in Paris marked a new milestone in his illustrious career. With a time of 26:43.14, he set a new Olympic record and became the first Ugandan to win two Olympic gold medals. His impressive haul now includes three Olympic medals – two gold and one silver.

But Cheptegei’s records extend far beyond the Olympics. He is also the world record holder in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events, solidifying his position as the greatest Ugandan athlete and one of the greatest in the world. With his latest triumph, Cheptegei has cemented his legacy as a trailblazer in the world of athletics. Meanwhile, he plans to transition to the marathon after the Olympics.
