Tarsis Orogot, a promising Ugandan athlete who is currently pursuing a degree in Sports Management at the University of Alabama, has captured the spotlight with his spirited performance at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics.
Orogot comfortably sailed through to the men’s 200m semifinals, scheduled for Wednesday evening, after winning Heat 2 via lane 3 in 20.32 seconds. Uganda has not had a male sprinter at the Olympics since bronze medalist Davis Kamoga at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
Meanwhile, the Ugandan-USA-based sprinter is not new to the world stage, as he also made it to the 200m final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
His journey to the semifinals was nothing short of impressive, as he secured his spot as one of the top three fastest runners-up across all heats. In his heat, he finished fourth with a time of 20.44 seconds.
Orogot’s foray into international championships began in 2021 when he showcased his potential at the U20 World Championship in Nairobi. There, he left a mark by securing fourth place in the 200-meter dash with an impressive time of 20.57 seconds. Notably, he set a new Ugandan national record in the semifinals, clocking in at 20.37 seconds.
In the same championship, Orogot also showcased his versatility by reaching the semifinals in the 100m sprint, where he clocked a time of 10.37 seconds before being eliminated.
Fast forward to 2023, representing the University of Alabama, Orogot continued to make waves. His exceptional performance saw him clock an impressive time of 20.20 seconds for the 200m indoors, setting a world-leading mark in Albuquerque and underlining his status as a rising star in the world of sprinting.
