Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei’s boyfriend, who was accused of setting her on fire, has passed away.

Dickson Ndiema died on Monday night at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret. He had been admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining burns.

Cheptegei also passed away at the same hospital on September 4, after Ndiema doused her with petrol and set her on fire following a disagreement. Ndiema sustained injuries from the fire during the incident in Trans Nzoia County. Cheptegei and Ndiema had a child together.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” the federation remarked.

The 33-year-old marathon runner will be laid to rest on Saturday, September 14, at her home in Bokwo District.

Meanwhile, the city of Paris, France, will pay tribute to Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed in the women’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced plans to name a sports venue in Cheptegei’s honor, ensuring her memory endures and symbolizing the message of equality promoted by the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
