After more than a year of leadership instability within the Uganda Netball Federation, the Normalisation Committee has announced elections for a new president of the governing body, scheduled for October 26.
Brig. Flavia Byekwaso, who served as the acting president during the repeated suspension periods of then-President Sarah Babirye Kityo, revealed during a press conference today that she will not be running for the position in the upcoming elections.
Byekwaso cited key issues that influenced her decision, including eligibility requirements, such as having held a leadership position in netball for a certain number of years, which she does not meet.
However, Byekwaso hinted at a potential return to the race if some of these issues, which she believes are designed to exclude certain candidates, are resolved.
Byekwaso’s main contender in the race was Ucanda Jocelyn, the former She Cranes manager and the current NIC manager. Ucanda has expressed strong confidence in winning the election, stating that she is merely waiting to be sworn in as the new Netball Federation President.
“I have been involved in this game for 15 years, and I love it. I’m just waiting to be sworn in,” Ucanda said in an interview.
“I was once the She Cranes manager and simultaneously the NIC manager. I handled those responsibilities well, and I believe I can handle this too because I know how to manage such matters,” she added.
