Victoria University Kampala officially unveiled its rugby team, the Victoria Sharks, and their new season kit on Thursday, marking a significant milestone as the team prepares for its debut in the Uganda Rugby Premier League, the top-tier league in the country.

The university shared the announcement on its official X handle, stating:
“Today, Victoria University proudly unveiled the Victoria Sharks, our dynamic rugby team, along with their striking new kit. The ‘Victoria Sharks’ embody our values of boldness, leadership, and excellence. Join us as we make waves in the rugby world.”

A Rapid Rise to the Top

Formed just two years ago, the Sharks secured a spot in Uganda’s top-tier rugby competition after defeating Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi (UMU) in last month’s playoff finals. This meteoric rise has been lauded as a testament to the team’s dedication and strong leadership under the guidance of their patron, Prof. Lawrence Muganga, Vice Chancellor of Victoria University.

Speaking at the launch, Isaac Lutwama, CEO of the Uganda Rugby Union, praised the Sharks for their impressive journey:
“In just two years, this team has shown incredible dedication to excellence. Their rise from the Varsity Sevens to the Premier League is a testament to their commitment. We look forward to seeing them compete at the highest level.”

A Comprehensive Support System

The Victoria Sharks’ success is built on a strong foundation of player welfare. Vice Chancellor Muganga emphasized the team’s achievements, including their undefeated streak in the University Sevens, and highlighted the university’s efforts to support the players:
“This has been an incredible journey. This team has truly lived up to the high expectations we’ve worked hard to achieve. Beyond the sport, we are investing in their futures through scholarships and welfare programs, ensuring they thrive both on and off the field.”

The university offers players insurance and scholarships, aligning the rugby program with its broader goal of fostering collaboration, resilience, and discipline among students. Prof. Muganga also urged the team to embrace technology, reflecting the university’s commitment to innovation in education.

Expanding Opportunities

Mr. Ssebuliba Patrick, Chairman of the Victoria Sharks Rugby Club, acknowledged the university’s substantial support, which includes scholarships for all team members. However, he called for additional resources to help players access higher education opportunities. In response, Victoria University pledged to provide rugby scholarships to 13 promising players this season, further strengthening the team’s foundation.
