President Yoweri Museveni, alongside Education and Sports Minister, First Lady Janet Museveni, has officially inaugurated the National High Altitude Training Centre in Teryet, Kapchorwa District.

The facility, located on 75 hectares of land at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, was recognized by World Athletics on March 14, 2023.

Designed to elevate Uganda’s prominence in athletics, the Teryet Training Centre boasts cutting-edge amenities tailored to foster peak performance among athletes.

Phase I of the project includes an athletic track, an artificial turf field, a jogging track, modern sports equipment, a hostel block, and an external kitchen and dining hall, creating a comprehensive training environment.

The facility’s journey began in 2010 when President Museveni called for the establishment of a high-altitude training center to honor Uganda’s growing success in athletics.

This initiative was inspired by the achievements of Moses Kipsiro, who captured gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m races at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Kipsiro repeatedly asked for such a facility, showing how important it was.

Further momentum came in 2012 and 2013 with the extraordinary performances of Stephen Kiprotich, Uganda’s long-distance running icon, who clinched gold at the Olympics and the World Championships. His success underscored the urgent need for a dedicated space to nurture the country’s athletic talent.

The National High Altitude Training Centre is set to become a hub for athletic excellence, fostering high-performance sports training and contributing to the long-term development of Uganda’s sports sector.

With its strategic location, the center is poised to transform the landscape of athletics in the country and beyond.
