Vipers Sports Club President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa has pledged that the club will continue paying deceased striker Abubaker Lawaal’s salary for six months to his family as a token of appreciation for his service and dedication to the club.

Mulindwa made the revelation at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende during the Dua prayer in honor of Abubaker Lawal, who passed away earlier this week.

“We are going to be paying the family for the next six months the equivalent of what Lawaal had been earning,” Mulindwa said.

He added, “Lawaal was the true definition of a professional player—an icon, great, and very disciplined. He was very humble and respectful to everyone. He contributed massively to Vipers.”

The club president also confirmed that the club will cover the costs of repatriating Lawaal’s body to his village in Sokoto, Nigeria.

The former FUFA president urged the police to expedite the investigation into Lawal’s death. The footballer reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade along Entebbe Road.

“We need to know the cause of Lawaal’s death. The only thing we are hearing is that he fell from the third floor, but we need to establish what caused the fall,” he said.

Lawaal joined Vipers in 2022 and made history by scoring the club’s first-ever group stage goal in the CAF Champions League in a 1-1 draw against Raja Casablanca. He had been a jovial presence in the team.
