Construction of the Hoima City Stadium, one of Uganda’s key venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is progressing rapidly, with the project now significantly ahead of schedule.

During an official inspection on Friday, the Turkish construction firm Summa, which is overseeing the $129 million project, assured government officials and members of the AFCON 2027 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) that the stadium will be completed four months earlier than initially planned.

Government officials, led by Minister Peter Ogwang, tour Hoima City Stadium under the guidance of Summa project manager Murat Altun.

“The contractor is ahead of schedule and will finish the stadium about four months before the contracted deadline,” said Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang. “This means Uganda will receive the stadium as a Christmas gift.”

Originally scheduled for completion within 18 months from its groundbreaking in July 2023, the stadium is now expected to be ready by October or early November.

Summa’s project manager, Murat Altun, led a two-hour tour of the site, confirming that the stadium’s concrete structural work is complete. Seating installation is currently underway, with seats being fixed in a clockwise direction around the terraces. Once finished, the stadium will have a seating capacity of 20,000. Roofing work is also in progress, with cranes currently fitting the pavilion section.

The stadium’s exterior will be adorned in Uganda’s national colors: black, yellow, and red. Meanwhile, the main pitch is scheduled to be covered with hybrid grass by July, and the basement parking structure is already complete.

In addition to the main stadium, construction is advancing on the adjacent indoor arena, which will house 2,000 seats.

The nearby swimming pool is complete, and preparations for the outer football pitch, including grass laying, are also underway. The perimeter wall has been finalized, and plans are in place to create additional access points.

The stadium sits on 34 acres of land, with 10 acres donated by the family of Dr. James Rujumba, 14 acres contributed by FUFA, and the remaining acreage secured by the government.

With visible progress and accelerated timelines, Hoima Stadium is well on its way to becoming a centerpiece of Uganda’s AFCON 2027 hosting ambitions.
