Uganda Cranes out to reignite CHAN hopes against Guinea at Namboole

The Uganda Cranes are gearing up for a crucial Group C clash against Guinea this evening at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, as they look to reignite their CHAN 2024 campaign and restore hope among their home fans.

After a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Algeria in their opening match, the Cranes are determined to bounce back stronger and keep their dream of progressing beyond the group stages alive—a feat they have never achieved in CHAN history.

Despite the early setback, morale remains high in the camp. With two more group games to go, the team believes this is the moment to reset and push forward. The tournament, co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, presents a golden opportunity for the Cranes to break their group stage curse and write a new chapter in front of their home supporters.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, head coach Morley Byekwaso struck a confident tone, urging fans and players alike to stay focused on the bigger picture.

“We’ve moved on from the first game,” Byekwaso said. “Football is about how you respond, and the boys are mentally ready. We’ve corrected our mistakes, and tomorrow, we want to give the fans something to smile about.”

The coach also rallied the Cranes faithful to turn up in large numbers and fill Namboole with energy and belief.

“Our supporters are our twelfth man. We know the result hurt, but we’re still in the race. Their presence will give the players the push they need,” he added.

Midfielders Emmanuel Anyama and Marvin Youngman are being assessed for fitness ahead of the tie, but the rest of the squad is fit and ready for action.

Third-choice captain and defensive pillar Rogers Torach also spoke with resolve, emphasising the squad’s unity and fighting spirit.

“The mood in camp is great. We’re focused and hungry. Every player knows what’s at stake, and we’re ready to fight for the badge and for our country,” Torach stated.

The Cranes have history on their side—having beaten Guinea 1-0 during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. That result fuels their belief heading into this highly anticipated rematch under the Namboole floodlights.

The team concluded its final preparations with a training session at 10:15 AM on Thursday morning at the stadium’s training ground.

As the spotlight returns to Namboole, all eyes will be on the Cranes to deliver a performance worthy of the crest they wear—with pride, passion, and purpose.
