Buoyed by their emphatic 3-0 victory over Guinea – courtesy of goals from Reagan Mpande, Allan Okello, and Ivan Ahimbisibwe – the Uganda Cranes are brimming with confidence as they prepare to face Niger in their third CHAN group fixture this evening at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Niger, who have yet to earn a point after one game, sit bottom of Group C. The Cranes, meanwhile, occupy second place, just one point behind the table leaders on four points from two matches.

Speaking at the final pre-match press conference, head coach Morley Byekwaso voiced his confidence in the squad’s readiness:

“All games are different, each with its own challenges and tactical demands. I can’t promise the same lineup as last time, but we might make a few changes depending on the opponent. Those who performed well in the previous match will get their chance again.”

Byekwaso paid special tribute to the fans, whose overwhelming support in the last match left a lasting impression.

“This game means a lot to us. We appreciate the fan base and their energy, especially the huge turnout last time – it was the first time I’ve seen such a big crowd behind us. We respect them deeply and promise to give our best. A win here would be a big step toward advancing from the group.”

On the injury front, Byekwaso revealed that some players are still recovering from knocks sustained in the last match and will undergo late fitness assessments.

“We’ll decide this afternoon how best to use them. Everyone – technical staff, fans, and players – must play their part. The morale in camp is even higher than before. We know Niger will fight hard after losing their first game, but we’re ready to take the three points.”

Defender Gavin Kizito echoed the coach’s determination.

“We lost our first game and bounced back in the second, so Niger can do the same. We can’t take them lightly. Every player is ready to give their all and make every minute on the pitch count.”

The Cranes will wrap up their Group C campaign on Friday, August 18, against South Africa.
