SMACK League returns for eighth season with a competitive twist

The SMACK League, powered by Guinness, is set to kick off its eighth season this Sunday, September 28, at the IUEA Sports Grounds in Kansanga, Kampala.

All 22 league teams are ready for the new season, with each one set to play on opening day.

David Kawooya, one of the league’s executive members and organizers, revealed that this season comes with a new twist. For the first time, teams have been pooled based on their ‘graduation’ years. Classes from the 1980s to 2009 have been grouped into Pool A, while those from 2010 to 2020 make up Pool B.

According to Kawooya, the new pool seeding format is expected to level the playing field and spark sharper competition, unlike in previous editions where groups were determined randomly.

“One of the big advantages of this new pool structure is that we’re going to see a lot more derbies. You have classes that were just a year apart in school now facing off, like when one group was in Senior One and the other in Senior Two. That familiarity adds intensity. We’re expecting more tightly contested games, more competition, and it’s something we’re really looking forward to,” he added.

Game Day One will begin with a full slate of matches from both pools, kicking off at 9 AM.

Alks (2007), the reigning champions, begin their title defense against Block Owners (2002) in a heavyweight Pool A encounter. Alks will be eager to pick up where they left off, but Block Owners are no strangers to pressure and will be keen to spoil the party.

Two derbies are set to light up the season opener. Knights (2017) will come up against Gladiators (2016), while Vikings (2014) will take on Cyclones (2013). With the teams being familiar rivals, competitive and thrilling games are expected on the pitch.

Pirates (Class of 2012) will face off against Spartans (Class of 2020) in Pool B. The Spartans, making their league debut, will be looking to make an immediate impact and prove they belong among the more experienced squads.

Throughout the day, fans can expect nonstop action on the pitch as they enjoy great vibes, music, and cold Guinness with their crew.

Mercy Atwongyeire, Project Manager for Premium Beer at Uganda Breweries Limited, expressed pride in Guinness’ support of the SMACK League, highlighting its role in uniting the old boys through sport.

“Guinness believes in the power of sport to connect people and build strong communities. This partnership is about more than just playing football. It is about reconnecting old friends, sharing memories, and creating new ones that last,” she said.

Over the years, the SMACK League has delivered drama, rivalries, and unforgettable moments. With a new pool structure in place and Guinness ready to elevate the matchday experience, Season eight promises even more excitement and memorable moments for everyone involved.
