Gulu City is gearing up to host the second edition of the Gulu Marathon this Saturday, 6 December, as the year draws to a close. The event was officially launched on Tuesday at Kampala Club, with organisers and sponsors promising a bigger, more exciting experience than last year’s debut.

The marathon is designed to go beyond sport. It promotes Northern Uganda’s cultural heritage, tourism, health, education, and economic empowerment. A wide network of partners and sponsors has joined the initiative, contributing not only financially but also through programmes that strengthen wellness, unity, and community development.

Robert Wanok, Equity Bank’s Head of Retail, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to the event.
“Our sponsorship aligns with our mission to transform lives and livelihoods while supporting health, community engagement, and the preservation of culture. We are proud to stand with the people of Northern Uganda,” he said.

He added that Gulu’s story symbolises resilience and shared responsibility. “When each partner picks up one piece of the work, together we build the bigger picture. It truly takes a community to raise a generation and shape a future.”

Saturday’s race will be followed by a Northern Ugandan buffet dinner featuring local cuisine, traditional performances, and entertainment from regional musicians. Swangz Avenue artists, Buzz Events, and Tusker Lite will power an after-party to close the celebrations.

Marathon convenor Francis Gimara said the event has grown faster than expected.
“Last year, we targeted 500 runners and got 600. This year, we have already surpassed our target again. The support has been incredible. This marathon is a collective effort made possible by partners who believe in creating a meaningful and impactful event for the community,” he said.

With World Athletics certification, the Gulu Marathon is now recognised internationally, elevating it from a regional event to a global running platform.

The announcement of cash prizes has added to the excitement in Gulu. Ronald Oloya, an addiction coach working with local youth, said the rewards will motivate young people to participate in positive, meaningful activities.
“It’s more than just a run. It will bring the city together, promote unity, and showcase the true spirit and culture of Gulu,” he noted.

Winners in the 42km race will walk away with Shs3 million, Shs1.5 million, and Shs1 million for first, second, and third. The 21km category will offer Shs1.5 million, Shs1 million, and Shs500,000. The 10km winners will earn Shs1 million, Shs500,000, and Shs250,000. The wheelchair race—one of the marathon’s main highlights—will feature prize amounts similar to the 10km category.

The marathon will start and finish at Kaunda Grounds.
