Construction of the John Akii-Bua Olympic Memorial Stadium in Lira City is gathering momentum, with steady progress raising hopes of a major sports and economic boost for northern Uganda.
The multi-billion-shilling project, which is expected to be completed in 2027, is already well past its foundational phase. Contractors broke ground in December 2024, and key groundwork has since been completed, signalling a strong start to the ambitious development.

Built at a cost of Shs470 billion, the 20,000-capacity stadium is being delivered by SAMCO National Construction Company. Engineers have finalised all earthworks, installed 872 reinforced piles, and completed structural columns, footings and pile testing—an essential milestone that paves the way for the next stages of construction.
Activity at the site remains high, with more than 30 subcontractors currently engaged in various aspects of the build.
The stadium forms the centrepiece of a wider, world-class sports complex designed to meet international standards.

In addition to the main athletics arena featuring an eight-lane track, the complex will include a 2,000-seat indoor sports hall, a 25-metre semi-Olympic swimming pool, and outdoor courts for basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton. A dedicated parking area capable of accommodating up to 1,000 vehicles is also part of the plan.
Named after Uganda’s first Olympic gold medallist, John Akii-Bua, the facility is expected to do more than host sporting events. Once completed, it is projected to turn Lira into a regional sports hub, stimulate local business activity and serve as a lasting tribute to one of Uganda’s greatest sporting heroes.
