Ugandan forward Joel Madondo has taken the next step in his career after securing a move to South Africa’s top flight, joining Richards Bay FC on a two-year deal.
The Premier Soccer League side offered Madondo a contract after he impressed during a trial period, convincing the club’s technical team that he was ready for the challenge. His former club, Eswatini champions Nsingizini Hotspurs, later confirmed the transfer, saying all conditions had been met and personal terms agreed.
Announcing the deal, Nsingizini said they had accepted Richards Bay’s offer despite Madondo leaving earlier than planned, noting that the decision was made in the best interests of the player’s future. The club also thanked him for his contribution during his short stay.
Madondo’s departure ends his time in Eswatini just months after he joined Nsingizini in July 2025 on a two-year contract. His new agreement with Richards Bay will keep him in South Africa until at least the January 2028 transfer window.
At Richards Bay, Madondo will link up with fellow Ugandan Salim Jamal Magoola, the goalkeeper who has been with the club since July 2022 and is now one of its most experienced players.
The striker’s move also strengthens Uganda’s presence in the PSL this season. He becomes the third Ugandan currently playing in South Africa’s elite league, alongside veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango of reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
Over the years, several Ugandan players have made their mark in South African football, including David Obua, Geoffrey Massa, Moses Waiswa and Timothy Batabaire. Others such as Yasser Mugerwa, Isma Watenga, Brian Umony and Geoffrey Sserunkuma have also featured in the league, highlighting a growing Ugandan footprint in one of Africa’s most competitive football environments.
