The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a series of punishments following incidents that occurred during the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final in Morocco.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board found that players, coaches, officials and supporters from Senegal and Morocco breached rules on fair play, discipline and integrity. The sanctions include match bans, heavy fines and the rejection of a formal protest.
Below is a simple breakdown of the decisions.
Sanctions against Senegal
Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw was banned for five CAF matches for unsporting conduct. He was also fined USD 100,000 for behaviour that CAF said brought the game into disrepute.
Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each banned for two CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.
The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) was handed several fines. It was fined USD 300,000 for the bad behaviour of Senegalese supporters and another USD 300,000 for unsporting conduct by players and technical staff. The federation was also fined USD 15,000 after five Senegal players received cautions during the match.
Sanctions against Morocco
Moroccan player Achraf Hakimi was banned for two CAF matches, although one of the matches has been suspended for one year and will only be enforced if he reoffends. Ismaël Saibari was banned for three CAF matches and fined USD 100,000 for unsporting behaviour.
The Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) was also fined for several incidents during the final. It received a USD 200,000 fine for inappropriate behaviour by ball boys and a further USD 100,000 after players and officials invaded the VAR area and interfered with the referee. The federation was additionally fined USD 15,000 for supporters using laser pointers during the match.
Morocco’s protest rejected
Morocco had lodged a protest accusing Senegal of breaching AFCON regulations during the final. However, CAF rejected the protest, ruling that it did not meet the required standards under the competition’s rules. This means the result of the final stands and no further action will be taken on the complaint.
