The Uganda Silverbacks are stuck in Egypt after their planned journey home was disrupted by a sudden regional air travel shutdown.
The national basketball team had just completed their FIBA World Cup qualifier games in Alexandria and were scheduled to fly out through Dubai. However, the unexpected closure of Dubai International Airport and restrictions across parts of the Middle East airspace brought their travel plans to an abrupt halt. This is due to escalating instability between Iran and the United States.
With their booked route no longer available and several airlines suspending flights, the players and officials are now stranded in Alexandria as they wait for a new way back home.
Team management has called an emergency meeting to assess possible alternative routes, although the options are limited and likely to be more expensive.
Silverbacks media officer Brian Tuka said the meeting, scheduled for midday East African time, will determine the next step for the delegation.
For now, the entire basketball leadership is on the ground with the team, a move that has helped keep the players calm despite the uncertainty surrounding their return.
The situation stems from rising tensions in the Middle East that have forced the closure of key airspace and major travel hubs, disrupting flights worldwide and leaving several teams and travellers stranded.
Until a new travel plan is secured, the Silverbacks remain in Egypt waiting for clearance and a safe route home.
