A member of parliament from Rwanda has resigned and issued an apology for “drink-driving.”

Gamariel Mbonimana’s resignation for “personal reasons” was approved by parliament on Monday.

His resignation came a day after President Paul Kagame criticized an MP, whom he didn’t name, for drink-driving. The police’s failure to detain the MP was another thing that Kagame criticized.

Mbonimana apologized to Rwandans and the president in a statement on Twitter, adding that he has “decided not to take alcohol anymore.”

Since 2018, Mbonimana has held the office of MP. He belongs to the Liberal Party, a coalition partner of Kagame’s RPF party.
