After the forceful arrest and deportation of two senior MTN Uganda staff on Tuesday for allegedly engaging in activities that threaten national security, news coming from the biggest telecom in Uganda is that several staff members are living in fear.

The 500Mbs from MTN are said to have been given in error. They have since been deactivated so customers who received them may not be able to use them. The operator has since apologised for the inconvenience. Please contact the customer help line for clarification

This could explain why another MTN staffer wrongly sent out 500MBs of data to all data users – a move that has since excited and shocked subscribers in equal measure with some wondering why the generosity and others questioning the ‘convenience’ of the telecom’s magnanimity especially in light of the deportations.

The text message most subscribers received after receiving the FREE data.

According to insider information, the free MBs were supposed to be sent to dormant internet users as an incentive to lure them to take interest in using fast internet but instead, it was also received by the data guzzlers using 4G smartphones.

When this writer called the MTN Customer Care helpline at 9:30am on Wednesday morning to inquire why the internet had stopped working despite having at 480MBs still valid, the advisor said that the data was being recalled back because it was sent in error.

Instead, he was advised to load his own data that as the telecom rectifies the error.

The telecom regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has confirmed the development and advised subscribers to be patient as the telecom resolves the problem.

“The 500MBs from MTN are said to have been given in error. They have since been deactivated so customers who received them may not be able to use them. The operator has since apologised for the inconvenience. Please contact the customer help line for clarification,” UCC tweeted.
