Last week Opposition caucus in Parliament resolved to boycott Parliamentary sittings in demand for action against continued cases of torture and abductions allegedly practiced by the state security operatives.

The boycott has been ongoing for a week now but government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa has claimed that opposition MPs only dodge parliamentary sittings but are present during lunchtime.

“These opposition members boycotted Parliament but you see them coming for free lunch from Parliament canteen,” said Tayebwa while appearing on NBS TV this morning.

Tayebwa further stated that the meeting where it was resolved to boycott Parliament was chaired by opposition strongman Bobi Wine real name Robert Kyagulanyi.

“There has been a very big push in the opposition. Our brother Mathias Mpuuga (Leader of Opposition) and a few of his colleagues have been under pressure to be radical. I pity him,” he said.

He further mocked Bobi Wine saying, “When the European Parliament asked NUP to go and present on the issue of torture, Bobi Wine took his wife and brother with him. We have a Leader of Opposition and many capable leaders who would accompany him there.”

On the issue of torture, Tayebwa said that government does not torture, but overzealous people do. He said that torture is not only physical but also verbal, therefore the opposition should tolerate others the way they want to be tolerated.

“This is personal advice to some people. Stop provoking individuals to personal battles. Some of these people will take it personally and then you will come out and blame the government,” he said.
