49-year-old woman walks over 400km to Namugongo, collapses to death

The territorial police at Kira Division is currently investigating the death of a pilgrim identified as Arinitwe Jackeline, 49, a peasant at Katokori Village, Kyanarwa Parish, Katanda sub-county in Rubirizi District. Rubirizi to Namugongo is about 430km.

The incident happened today at about 11:30 am in Namugongo Parish, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.

The deceased was among the 90 pilgrims who trekked from West Ankole diocese for the Martyrs’ Day celebrations slated for Friday, June 3.

Police say that her body has been conveyed to the City Mortuary, Mulago, for a postmortem to help establish the exact cause of death.

“The police would like to convey their condolences to the family of the deceased person and also advise all pilgrims to always rehydrate in a way of taking enough water and also having enough rest during the pilgrimage,” police say.
