In an impressive display of their commitment to public safety, the police and other security agencies showcased their role in safeguarding the pilgrims during the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations held in Namugongo and the surrounding areas.

Over the past two weeks, law enforcement personnel have established camps in and around the Catholic and Anglican Shrines. However, the last three days witnessed an extraordinary surge in pilgrim numbers, placing an immense workload on the security forces.

From the Nalya By Pass Roundabout, Kireka, Kyaliwajjala, and Kira, a significant deployment of uniformed men and women was observed, ensuring a strong security presence.

Pilgrims in the queue at the Catholic site as security officers ensure everything is in order.

At both the Catholic and Anglican shrines, extensive security measures were in place, including the deployment of security officers and a range of equipment such as anti-riot vehicles and surveillance cameras. Counter-terrorism vehicles were strategically positioned at all entrances to the shrines.

To maintain a high level of security, thorough check-ups were conducted on all pilgrims, resulting in the confiscation of sharp objects such as forks, mirrors, and pens. The K9 Unit played a vital role, with their dogs meticulously sniffing out any potential threats.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson, revealed that more than 50 suspects involved in various petty crimes, particularly pickpocketing, had been apprehended and were awaiting screening.

The collective efforts of the police and security agencies ensured that the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations transpired safely, allowing pilgrims to partake in the religious observances with peace of mind.
