Police in Kampala have arrested a 40-year-old man, David Tumwine, also known as Busoni, at Kisenyi Bus Terminal in Kampala after a security check uncovered a firearm and other suspicious items in his possession.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Tumwine is a resident of Mubuteraniro village in Mubende District. He was intercepted around 9:00 a.m. during routine security checks at the busy terminal.

Tumwine, who was carrying two bags, reportedly attempted to flee when asked to stop for a search, abandoning the bags in the process. However, the terminal’s security team acted swiftly, pursuing and apprehending him.

Upon searching the abandoned bags, authorities recovered a sub-machine gun (SMG), 24 live rounds of ammunition, two magazines, three machetes, a one-litre bottle of petrol, and ropes.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Tumwine was traveling from Kyotera District to Busia. We are working to trace the origin of the firearm and establish the suspect’s intentions,” Owoyesigyire said.

Umaru Matovu, Chairperson of the Uganda Bus Operators Association (UBOA), commended the security team’s vigilance, attributing the successful arrest to increased security measures at bus terminals. The UBOA recently bolstered security by deploying additional guards to ensure public safety.

Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially during this busy holiday period.
