The Uganda Cranes stand just 90 minutes away from rewriting their African Nations Championship (CHAN) story as they face South Africa in a decisive Group C showdown tonight at 8pm at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
A draw would be enough to send Uganda into the quarter-finals for the first time in their seven CHAN appearances. Victory, however, would seal top spot in the group and guarantee a return to Namboole for the last-eight tie.
Head coach Morley Byekwaso insists his side will not settle for less than three points despite the comfort of needing only a draw.
“South Africa are a good side, very sharp in attack, but we know what is at stake,” Byekwaso told journalists at Sunday’s pre-match briefing. “We worked very hard to be top of this group. We want to win regardless. The humiliation against Algeria only made us stronger. The response in the last two games shows this team is ready to make history.”
Uganda currently leads Group C with six points from three matches, bouncing back impressively from a 3-0 opening defeat to Algeria with a 3-0 victory over Guinea and a 2-0 win against Niger. They will, however, be without key midfielder Joel Sserunjogi, suspended after picking up two yellow cards.
“Losing Joel is a blow, but every player has his moment. I trust the boys to rise to the occasion,” Byekwaso added. He also reserved praise for the home crowd: “Our fans have been incredible from the first day. We need them in full voice to help us finish the job.”
Group C Scenarios:
- Uganda: A draw secures qualification; a win guarantees top spot.
- South Africa: Must win to advance.
- Algeria: Need victory over Niger to progress.
- Niger: Already eliminated, playing for pride.
With the stakes higher than ever and a roaring Namboole behind them, tonight’s clash is more than just a football match—it is Uganda’s chance to break the group-stage curse and etch their names into CHAN history.
