Various groups of international runners and running influencers have arrived in the country ahead of the 2025 Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon, scheduled for this Saturday, August 23, in Kasese.

The team includes runners from the UK (14), USA (13), UAE (3), South Africa (13), and Namibia (1). Each group has a filming crew and, aside from running, they will also be filming different tourism sites for their global audiences.

Among the notable figures is British endurance athlete Nick Butter, who has run 1,067 marathons so far. He also took part in the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon last year, and this weekend’s edition in Kasese will be his 1,068th race.

Speaking to the media in a press briefing at La Petit Village Hotel and Spa in Kampala on Monday, Nick expressed his excitement about returning to Uganda for the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon. He noted that last year’s experience left him deeply impressed by both the challenging but scenic route and the warm hospitality of the people.

“I’m looking forward to the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon this weekend. Last year, it was really a good experience. You’re surrounded by mountain peaks, some of the most amazing scenery, and the unique thing about it is that it starts at the Equator. Running in a game park is also a unique experience because back at home, we don’t have races like this. I also hope to make new friends,” Nick said.

Sipho Marima, a South African endurance athlete, coach, and content creator recognized for his achievements in long-distance running, is another standout international runner in the country for the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon.

Sipho is in the country for the first time, and just like Nick with the UK team, he and his South African counterparts came aboard Uganda Airlines. Their participation in the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon not only draws international attention but also supports local Ugandan businesses, highlighting the race’s role in boosting the economy.

“Thank you for such a warm welcome, Uganda. It’s truly a privilege to experience this wonderful hospitality. I’m excited about the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon this weekend, and I’m looking forward to exploring the Pearl of Africa over the next few days and taking in all the amazing sights and experiences the country has to offer,” Sipho said.

The arrival of the international runners coincides with the arrival of renowned British sports commentator Rob Walker, who will run alongside his family in Kasese. This will be his second year running the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon following his debut in 2022.

Amos Wekesa, the team lead for the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon, stated that having international figures fly in for the event shows the growing global appeal of the race and highlights Uganda as a top destination for sports tourism.

“We are thrilled to welcome runners and influencers from across the world. Their participation not only raises the profile of the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon but also shines a spotlight on Uganda’s natural beauty and the vibrant local businesses that support such events. We hope this inspires more international athletes to experience what our country has to offer,” Wekesa said.

Denise Paula Nazzinda, the Brand Manager for Tusker Lite at Uganda Breweries Limited, says the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon continues to grow in popularity and, being a World Athletics certified race, it meets the highest international standards.

“The Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon has truly grown into a world-class event. It is more than just a race; it is a celebration of fitness, fun, wellness, and adventure for everyone, whether you are running for the thrill, the challenge, or simply to enjoy Uganda’s stunning scenery. We are proud that it brings people together from across the world while also supporting local communities and businesses,” she said.

The 2025 Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon promises to be its biggest and most exciting edition yet, with nearly 6,000 runners from up to 50 countries. With strong support from the government and global partners, eco-friendly operations, lively race events, and a boost to local tourism and businesses, this year’s marathon is set to make a real impact.
