Social media has recently been ‘flooded’ with complaints from consumers over ‘illegal’ deductions while purchasing electricity units in March and April 2021. Costumers are given lesser units than the usual.

Following such overwhelming complaints, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has directed utility company Umeme to stop illegal deductions from its prepaid energy vending system known as yaka.

“This uncommunicated action has left consumers with lesser energy units compared to what is expected based on the approved tariff structure,” ERA’s communications director Julius Wandera said in a notice issued on Tuesday.

Wandera said that Umeme Limited has been directed to immediately stop the action as ERA conducts investigations into the matter.

“We appreciate the patience of affected electricity users as we investigate the matter,” he said.
