In a bid to equip Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) with the tools needed to grow and thrive, the Industry Enhancement Centre (IEC) hosted a three-day seminar dubbed ‘Access to Finance Training’ held at their offices, in Kampala, from June 24 to 26.

The training brought together SME stakeholders from diverse sectors for intensive sessions focused on enhancing their knowledge in financial management and strengthening their capacity to manage business finances effectively.

On day two, I&M Bank Uganda took center stage, with Stella Akol, the bank’s Head of SME Banking, facilitating an engaging session on financial management.

Akol urged SMEs to prioritise financial literacy, and adopt sound practices that position them for sustainable growth and easier access to capital.

“SMEs need to understand the basics of financial management, including managing cash flow, separating business and personal finances, and knowing how to access affordable credit,” said Akol.

“At I&M Bank, we have a solid track record of helping SMEs grow by equipping them with these critical skills, and offerings. We want to be partners in your journey,” she added.

I&M Bank also provided on-site financial advisory support, offering entrepreneurs one-on-one consultations to assess their credit readiness, explore financing options, and learn how to leverage the bank’s SME products and digital banking tools.

Annette Nakiyaga, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at I&M Bank, emphasized the bank’s commitment to supporting SMEs:

“At I&M Bank, we understand that SMEs are a backbone of Uganda’s economy. That’s why we go beyond banking to offer the support, guidance, and tools they need to thrive. From tailored loan products to digital banking solutions and business advisory, we are your partner for growth. Because when SMEs grow, Uganda grows,” she said.

Terry Kinyua, Project Manager at IEC, noted the significance of such initiatives:

“We believe that practical knowledge is key to business success. By working with partners like I&M Bank, we are able to provide SMEs with actionable skills and financial insights that help them make better business decisions. Our mission is to empower them to grow sustainably and competitively,” Kinyua noted.

The training attracted participation from other financial institutions as well, reflecting a shared commitment to boosting SME capacity and financial literacy in Uganda.

IEC continues to support the private sector through regular trainings and workshops in areas such as business management, contract management, health and safety, environment, HR, supply chain, quality management, and more.
