Ugandan comedian Kapere Lufotose, whose real name was Yokana Mbuuse, died on Sunday, 1 November, aged 56, leaving behind a collection of hilarious skits, memorable one-liners and facial expressions that have made him a social media favourite.
His comedy has found a second life on TikTok and other social media platforms, where clips from his performances continue to circulate as memes and reaction videos. Some of his most popular moments include:
“Naye Banange”
One of Kapere’s most recognisable catchphrases is “Naye banange”, a Luganda expression he delivers with exaggerated shock, frustration or disbelief. The audio has become a popular reaction sound, with social media users using it to describe unexpected situations, embarrassing moments and everyday struggles.
“I Don’t Have a Soil!”
Another widely shared clip comes from a skit in which Kapere attempts to speak English. His unusual translation produces the memorable line, “I don’t have a soil!” The statement, intended to express his lack of land or financial means, has become a favourite among people joking about being broke, particularly football fans reacting to their teams’ defeats.
Kapere’s Funny Facial Expressions
Kapere’s facial expressions have also become memes in their own right. His ability to twist his face into exaggerated expressions earned him comparisons to digital face filters. Screenshots of his wide-eyed stares, open-mouthed reactions and suspicious looks are frequently shared to express confusion, disbelief and disappointment.
Maama Trump and the $100 Bill Skit
His comedy skits with Maama Trump also produced memorable moments, particularly one involving a $100 bill. In the scene, Kapere tears up an actual banknote before presenting an ordinary piece of paper as a $100 bill, confidently claiming it can be used to buy almost anything, including cigarettes, soft drinks and chairs.
The clip has become a humorous reference for people joking about financial struggles, questionable deals and misplaced confidence.
The Kapere Dance Challenge
Another popular clip shows Kapere leading a coordinated dance in a dusty compound while wearing an oversized purple top and shorts. His serious facial expression, combined with exaggerated arm movements and energetic dancing, made the video widely shareable.
