The Uganda Green Enterprise Finance Accelerator (UGEFA) and I&M Bank Uganda, are delighted to announce the beginning of a dynamic new partnership, focused on accelerating Uganda’s shift to a resilient, low-carbon, and inclusive economy.

This marks the first collaboration between UGEFA and I&M Bank, uniting both organisations’ commitment to supporting the next generation of green businesses.

Through this partnership, UGEFA and I&M Bank will join forces to expand access to innovative financial products and tailored business advisory support for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), leading the way in clean energy, sustainable manufacturing, eco-tourism, waste management, and green mobility. Backed by the European Union, and implemented by adelphi global gGmbH, this initiative is designed to empower enterprises that are driving positive environmental change and creating social value across Uganda.

The official launch event, held at Protea Hotel in Kampala, marks a significant milestone in strengthening the ecosystem for green business growth. The occasion also signals the opening of a new call for applications, inviting green SMEs to participate in the UGEFA programme, as well as benefit from expert-led capacity building, business development support, and access to finance, through I&M Bank and other financial partners.

Leadership Perspectives

Robin Bairstow, the Chief Executive Officer, I&M Bank Uganda, stated that finance is key in driving real environment and social change.

“We’re excited to partner with UGEFA to support the growth of green businesses in Uganda. At I&M Bank, we believe finance can drive real environmental and social change. Whether it’s helping small enterprises adopt clean energy, or financing irrigation systems that boost agricultural yields- sustainably, we’re committed to solutions that build a greener, more inclusive future.”

Gibson Nangono, the I&M Bank Chief Business Officer, applauded UGEFA for the important work they are doing for the country’s future.

“We’re excited to work with UGEFA to support green businesses. This partnership gives us a chance to connect with entrepreneurs who are making a real difference. At I&M Bank, we are proud to support those building a cleaner and more sustainable Uganda. We’re also doing our part as a bank to be more environmentally friendly and make our operations more sustainable.”

Annette Nakiyaga, the Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at I&M Bank, noted that the partnership reflects the bank’s commitment to supporting people, businesses, and ideas that are working towards a better future for everyone.

“This partnership is about more than finance. It’s about people. It’s about us trying to do the right thing for the environment, for the communities, and for future generations. We’re proud to be part of this journey.”

Cristina Bănuţă, Programme Manager – Access to Finance, Agribusiness and Land at the Delegation of the European Union to Uganda, said the new partnership would foster inclusive growth and environmental resilience. “The European Union is pleased to support this new partnership between UGEFA and I&M Bank. By extending access to finance and technical support for green enterprises, we are fostering inclusive growth and greater environmental resilience. We are confident this collaboration will help unlock the potential of Uganda’s green economy.”

Christine Meyer, the Project Lead at UGEFA, welcomed I&M Bank to the UGEFA community, saying the move will empower more green SMEs. “We warmly welcome I&M Bank to the UGEFA community. This partnership represents a powerful step towards enabling more green SMEs to scale their impact and drive sustainable innovation. With the new call for applications now open, we invite Uganda’s green entrepreneurs to join us in shaping a brighter, more sustainable future.”

Applications for the UGEFA programme are now open. Green enterprises interested in accessing tailored support and finance are encouraged to apply via the UGEFA website at www.ugefa.eu/apply, using the code IMBANK25.
