As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, GoldStar Insurance Company Limited has planted 150 trees at Kira Primary School in Wakiso District, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and community development.
The tree-planting exercise, held on 17 July, was organised in partnership with My Tree Initiative Uganda and the Rotary Clubs of Namugongo, Bukerere, Bweyogerere Central, Kyambogo and Kira under the project “Planting and Protecting Trees in Schools Across Kira Municipality.”
The initiative is one of the company’s corporate social responsibility activities marking three decades in business under the theme “30 Years. One Promise.” GoldStar said the campaign reflects its long-standing commitment to protecting not only the lives and property of its customers but also the environment that sustains communities.
During the exercise, GoldStar employees joined pupils in planting a mix of fruit and indigenous tree species, including avocado, mango, guava, jackfruit, Mugavu, Musambya, Ensaali and Entasesa.
More than 390 pupils also received practical training on tree planting, watering and long-term care from experts from My Tree Initiative Uganda. The school’s Environmental Club has since been tasked with overseeing the day-to-day care of the trees to ensure they survive and flourish.
Besides improving the school’s environment, the fruit trees are expected to supplement school meals within the next two to three years, while the indigenous trees will provide shade, help reduce soil erosion and minimise flooding around classrooms during heavy rains. Once fully grown, the trees are also expected to absorb an estimated three metric tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
Speaking during the event, GoldStar Insurance Chief Operations Officer Enock Mudadi said the company wanted its 30th anniversary to leave a lasting impact on the communities it serves.
“For 30 years, GoldStar has stood with Ugandans through life’s uncertainties by protecting what matters most to them. Planting these trees is another way of investing in the future and creating a lasting legacy for the next generation,” he said.
Mudadi added that the company remains committed to keeping its promise of protecting Ugandans, their families and businesses while promoting responsible environmental stewardship.
The project will now move into its second phase, during which My Tree Initiative Uganda will monitor the survival of the trees through regular maintenance visits, GPS mapping and continued engagement with the school and the surrounding community.
To recognise their role in protecting the environment, GoldStar also presented participating pupils with branded school bags, T-shirts and other learning materials, encouraging them to become long-term custodians of the trees.
