Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda has directed its employees to continue working from home even after the company resumed broadcasting and publishing, as management carries out safety assessments of its offices before staff can return.
The media house recently restored operations across its television, radio, newspaper and digital platforms, but employees have not yet been cleared to resume work from its Namuwongo headquarters or the Serena Conference Centre broadcast studios.
In an internal communication from the Human Resources department, the company said only employees specifically required to report back to the offices would be contacted directly by their supervisors.
“All staff who may be required to immediately return to our Namuwongo and Serena offices will be contacted directly by their supervisors with necessary guidance and instruction,” the notice states.
NMG said it would continue monitoring the situation and keep employees informed as management completes the assessment of the affected premises and decides when it is safe for the wider workforce to return.
The company has been preparing for the restart of its operations over the past several weeks. Editorial teams put in place business continuity plans, while journalists continued holding virtual editorial meetings and producing content in readiness for the resumption of normal broadcasting and publishing.
NMG’s operations were halted on 28 June after security agencies sealed off the company’s Namuwongo headquarters and its broadcast facilities at the Serena Conference Centre. The closure forced the suspension of services at the Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM.
