DJ Bugy Wants Kampala to Remember How the 2000s Felt

When Pius Fortunate Buguzi chose DJing over a career in medicine, he was making a decision that, at the time, may not have looked like the obvious one.

Known today as DJ Bugy, he trained in clinical medicine at Kampala School of Health Sciences, but music had begun pulling him in another direction. He taught himself the craft through online DJ tutorials, sneaking into his school’s computer lab to learn the techniques before testing his skills at school events and gradually finding his way into Kampala’s entertainment scene.

Years later, that decision has made him one of the DJs helping shape the city’s soundtrack.

Bugy’s mixes have become familiar beyond clubs and parties, finding their way into gyms and powering workouts, while his presence on Kampala’s party circuit has grown through venues such as Kenjis in Kisementi and Yard in Bukoto. He has thrown parties across the city, but for many revellers, it is The Bugy Show that has become the clearest expression of his evolution from DJ to curator of experiences.

The show has itself had a journey around Kampala, moving through venues including Legends Rugby Club, Lugogo and Kenjis before arriving at Motiv last year. The move offered something the show needed as its audience grew: more space to dance, catch up with friends and, increasingly, create content around the experience.

That idea of creating an experience rather than simply putting on a party is also where Tusker Lite’s “Own The Lite” philosophy comes into the picture.

As one of the key partners behind this year’s show, Tusker Lite is leaning into the same youthful, social energy that has become central to Bugy’s events. Rather than simply providing a soundtrack for the night, the brand is looking to be part of the atmosphere around it, a space where music, fashion, movement and self-expression come together.

Bugy has become a natural fit for that world. As a Tusker Lite influencer, he has previously been part of the brand’s experiences, including the Kampala Night Run, Neon Raves and the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon. Across these experiences, the connection has been less about the DJ simply appearing at an event and more about placing him within a lifestyle built around music, movement and enjoying the moment.

That energy will be carried into Thursday’s show, where “Own The Lite” meets the nostalgia of the 2000s.

On October 8, the eve of Uganda’s Independence celebrations, The Bugy Show returns to Motiv for the Y2K Bugy Edition, taking revellers back to the era of CDs, early music videos, ringtone culture and the songs that defined the first decade of the millennium.

Last year, Bugy labelled the experience the “2010s” edition, tapping into a decade whose music remains deeply embedded in the memories of many Kampala millennials. This time, he is going further back.

Speaking at a press conference at Next Media on Monday evening, Bugy called on revellers to embrace the theme beyond the music, asking them to show up in their best 2000s styling and fully immerse themselves in the experience.

It is an approach that reflects how Bugy has come to understand his profession. In previous conversations about the changing role of the DJ, he has spoken about the craft as more than simply playing records. It is about reading a crowd, understanding the room and curating a musical experience that people can connect with.

The Bugy Show has become an extension of that philosophy, with Tusker Lite’s Own The Lite attitude adding another layer to the experience: giving revellers the freedom to show up, express themselves and own their version of the night.

Bugy will be joined by MCs Josh MC, Hanz MC, Omi MC, MC Wright and Saint Trevor, while DJs Em That Guy, Dread Lazer, DJ Kai, Melvyn DJ, DJ Alza and Diziz will join him behind the decks.

Together, they will attempt to recreate the energy of an era that many Kampala revellers remember intimately, while introducing some of its sounds and style to a younger generation whose relationship with the 2000s is increasingly shaped by throwback culture.

For Bugy, Thursday is another chapter in a journey that began with learning DJing in a school computer lab and has grown into something much bigger: helping Kampala remember, discover and experience its music differently.

And with Tusker Lite bringing its Own The Lite energy to the Y2K experience, this time the invitation is simple, dress for the era, own the moment and let the music take you back.
