Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat remains in awe of his newfound status as the reigning world marathon men’s champion. On Sunday, Kiplangat secured the Gold medal in the 42km marathon at the 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary.
In an interview with NBS Sport this morning, Kiplangat was asked about the emotions surrounding his championship victory.
“Even now, I find it hard to believe that I’m the champion. Yet, when I watch the videos, it strengthens my resolve to push even harder for the next challenge,” Kiplangat shared.
Reflecting on the inspiration that fueled his remarkable triumph, Kiplangat pointed to the unwavering support of his wife.
“My wife has been my pillar of strength, always providing me with peace and steadfast prayers. Throughout my seven-year journey of training, she has been my constant companion, and I’m determined to cherish and support her as well,” he said.
Kiplangat also expressed his gratitude to his half-brother Jacob Kiplimo, acknowledging the significance of the advice he received.
“Jacob Kiplimo’s guidance played a pivotal role. He entrusted me with the responsibility of carrying forth our family’s legacy during the race, even when he was dealing with an injury. I’m grateful that our family has been blessed with this remarkable gift,” he said.
Speaking about the future of athletics in Uganda, Kiplangat expressed optimism and pride in the nation’s talent pool. He projected that in the coming years, Uganda will experience a surge in celebratory moments.
