As Uganda continues to vie for more medals at the ongoing Paris Olympics, there is a Ugandan who won a gold medal over the weekend but not for Uganda.

Eugene Omalla, the Ugandan-Dutch sprinter, won gold in the 400 meters mixed relay. He previously represented Uganda before switching to represent the Netherlands in April of this year.

Born on October 5, 2000, in Zoetermeer, Netherlands, to a Ugandan father and Dutch mother, Omalla is making a name for himself in the 400 meters sprint.

Omalla and his twin brother spent part of their childhood in Uganda, moving there at the age of seven. They both study at Kansas State University in the United States and compete under the Netherlands flag. His twin brother, Jaime, also competes in athletics.

Omalla’s career began when he set an African indoor record over 400 meters with a time of 45.18 seconds in Lubbock. He went on to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, where he ran a personal best of 46.06 seconds outdoors and 46.37 seconds indoors.

In 2024, Omalla made the switch to represent the Netherlands, a decision that paid off when he won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the mixed 4 x 400 meters relay. This achievement cemented his status as a rising star in athletics.
