Minister for Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has cried out to the public to strongly desist from flouting COVID-19 guidelines and directives because the country is destined to endure a worse wave of infections and deaths.

Currently Uganda has 2263 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1037 patients are undergoing treatment, Minister Aceng said the health facilities are getting stretched.

“Our health facilities will soon be overwhelmed due to the sky rocking numbers of infections,” Aceng said.

The minister said they have 1500 health workers dealing with COVID-19 treatment and previously they have been spending at least 30 minutes on a patient but with the increasing numbers it’s going to be impossible hence more deaths. 20 people have so far died of COVID-19 in Uganda.

Dr Richard Idro, the Uganda Medical Association has called on the Ministry of Health to train all medical workers to be able to handle COVID-19 patients.

Idro said the health ministry excellently handled the first wave of the pandemic but it forgot to equip its facilities for a second wave.

“The facilities lack enough health workers, beds and Personal Protective Equipments,” Idro said.
