Medical professionals under the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), alongside other healthcare experts, have urged the government to release a detailed report on Dr. Kizza Besigye’s health and facilitate his transfer to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

Their appeal follows Besigye’s frail and visibly weak appearance in court on Friday, where he seemed to struggle to catch his breath. His deteriorating condition has intensified calls for his immediate release to receive urgent medical care.

In a statement issued by UMA Secretary General Dr. Mirembe Joel, the association expressed grave concern over Besigye’s worsening health.

“Based on reports and disturbing visuals from his recent court appearance, it is evident that Dr. Besigye is physically unwell, suffering from a condition that has significantly deteriorated. This situation necessitates urgent specialized medical intervention from a healthcare team and facility of his choice,” the statement reads in part.

The UMA further said that Dr. Besigye is entitled to the highest standard of healthcare available, as dictated by international human rights guidelines, including the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners. They stressed that medical care must be provided without discrimination, regardless of his detention status.

The association called upon key government institutions—including the President, Judiciary, Parliament, and Prisons Service—to facilitate an immediate medical release so that Besigye can access specialized healthcare from trusted medical personnel and facilities.

UMA also urged authorities to conduct a thorough, independent medical assessment to accurately evaluate his health condition and determine the necessary treatment.

Should there be any delay in his release, UMA insisted that the government ensure continuous, competent medical supervision and intervention to prevent further health deterioration.

On Sunday, Erias Lukwago, Besigye’s lawyer, revealed that his client had been rushed from Luzira Prison to a private clinic in Bugolobi after his health took a turn for the worse.
