Besigye claims worship places remain closed because they’re not big taxpayers

Speaking during the National Prayers Day on Saturday, President Yoweri Museveni said the national COVID-19 taskforce will meet this week on Tuesday to decide on what to do with the schools, churches and bars among other institutions/sectors that are still under lockdown.

Churches, schools and bars have been closed since March when Uganda started locking down to avoid spike of the Coronavirus pandemic. In June, government started on the phased easing of lockdown and various businesses have resumed operation since.

As the above institutions wait for their fate to be decided, opposition strongman Dr Kizza Besigye claims that government is intentionally locking churches. He says they add no business value to government.

“Reasons why Uganda’s worship places remain closed are; they’re not big taxpayers and often, they tell their audiences what the NRM/M7 Junta doesn’t want said,” Besigye said in a tweet.

On Saturday while leading prayers at State House, Entebbe, religious leaders urged President Museveni to reopen places of worship because it’s only God who will deliver Uganda from COVID.
