The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) deputy spokesperson, John Kikonyogo, has said that the economic hardships in Uganda are making it hard for married or cohabiting couples to sustain marriages or relationships.

“The Ugandan economy has made it hard to sustain relationships,” said Kikonyogo during an interview on NTV.

According to Kikinyogo, financial instability is becoming the key factor to relationship dissolution and divorce in the country.

He says the current economic hardships have seen the prices of essential commodities shoot up. He believes that such economic circumstances have affected relationship quality by increasing conflict and reducing intimacy.

“Right now, our young people cannot afford to take their lovers on dates. How many of our young people can afford to spend Shs100,000 on a date? “he says.

Uganda is currently experiencing soaring commodity prices. This has greatly affected the cost of living.

Finance Minister Hon. Matia Kasaija has attributed the rise in the prices of most commodities to supply shortages caused by COVID -19 that had a huge impact on global trade.
