Nyanzi fbFacebook management has deactivated Makerere University lecturer Dr. Stella Nyanzi’s page for posting naked pictures of herself.

Nyanzi this Monday morning undressed, in protest against her boss Prof Mahmood Mamdani’s decision to evict her from her office at Makerere Institute of Social Research and posted the images and videos on her page.

“I have thrown my clothes outside Mamdani’s office. I am naked as I cry out for my office,” she wrote.

Nyanzi was evicted from her office on Friday on orders of Mamdani but she appealed to the university authorities and a letter from the Deputy Vice Chancellor directed Mamdani to allow Nyanzi retain her space until an alternative had been found.

Mamdani could have none of that and had her office locked.  This Monday morning, Nyanzi returned to MISR only to find her office still locked, then first locked Mamdani’s office before undressing herself and posting the images on her Facebook wall.

Facebook, deactivated her page for violating their policies. The social networking platform restricts posting photos of genitals or fully exposed buttocks, as well as some images of breasts if they include the nipple.

“We restrict the display of nudity because some audiences within our global community may be sensitive to this type of content – particularly because of their cultural background or age,” the policy states.

However, by the time Nyanzi’s page that had gone viral was deactivated, many people had already downloaded the images and they are circulating widely on other social media platforms like WhatsApp.
