Police in Mukono carried out a surprise operation at Casablanca bar much to the shock of shisha smokers. For starters Shisha smoking – also called hookah, narghile, waterpipe, or hubble bubble smoking – is a way of smoking tobacco, sometimes mixed with fruit or molasses sugar, through a bowl and hose or tube. The tube ends in a mouthpiece from which the smoker inhales the smoke from the substances being burnt into their lungs. It produces a thick smoke with a sweet fragrance unlike cigarette, something that has made it very popular.

Mukono police over the weekend raided Casablanca bar throwing the smokers into panic as they disappeared into the thick smoke that filled the atmosphere. The Police was left with pots of several shisha  pots and pipes which they confiscated.

According to a source, majority of  the smokers were students. Police did not make any arrest but issued  a stern warning to the management of the bar.

The officer in charge of Mukono District environment police, Robert Wowuya said the Tobacco control Act banned shisha smoking and praised the police for the implementation.

‘’The police  displayed warning at all bars against smoking shisha  but they have  turned a deaf ear,’’ Wowuya said.

However Cassablanca bar operators claim they had no knowledge that shisha smoking was prohibited.

In similar operation, Police in Kampala yesterday raided Arua Park and other busy streets down town confiscating Marijuana in a bid to tighten security during the festive season and warned the public about the use of drugs.
