It is the season to be jolly. The beauty of the festive season seemed to have softened the hearts of Makerere lecturers. Makerere University Academic staff Association(MUASA) have reached to an understanding with the Makerere University council to call off their strike.

In a meeting last evening between the University staff representatives, the Council and the administration at Senate conference hall, the two warring parties struck a compromise.
The MUASA leaders accepted to receive arrears of one month incentive that had primarily been offered by the council before the University was closed in August.

According to the MUASA publicist, Muhwezi Kamunyu, an emergency assembly meeting will be held on Thursday at Makerere University to premeditate on the agreed position by their executive.

“Consultations with Makerere University council and management this evening has offered us one month incentive arrears to be paid immediately. The other remaining 4 months will be paid before end of June 2017,’’ Kamunyu wrote.

It still remains unclear when the University will resume with studies however, Kamunyu revealed that consultations with Government over current financial state of the University is to resume immediately in the general assembly with all members on Thursday.

Makerere University academic staff had laid down their tools because of unpaid incentive arrears totaling to shs32billion. In October, as a result of persistent strikes, President Museveni ordered the indefinite closure of the University and a visiting committee was appointed to investigate the issues at the Ivory Tower.
The committee is expected to present its findings in February.
