National Unity Platform’s Gracious Kadondi, the newly sworn-in 92nd Guild President of Makerere University, used her inauguration to outline a clear plan focused on unity, inclusion, and improving student welfare.
At the heart of her message was a commitment to heal divisions among students that emerged during the heated election period. She pledged to bring students back together and rebuild a strong, united voice that represents everyone, regardless of political affiliation.
Kadondi emphasized that her leadership will not be centered on the power of the guild office alone. Instead, she promised a more inclusive approach—working closely with other former candidates and incorporating their ideas into her administration to better serve the student community.
On student welfare, she highlighted plans to strengthen the university’s student work scheme. This program allows students to take up part-time jobs on campus to earn income and gain experience.
Kadondi noted that only a small number of students currently benefit and pledged to push for an expansion so that more students can access these opportunities.
Outgoing Guild President Churchill Ssentamu used his farewell address to thank students for entrusting him with leadership, noting that his time in office was guided by faith and strong support from his family.
He pushed back against the idea that leadership is about visibility or popularity, describing it instead as a duty that demands discipline, consistency, and tough decision-making.
Ssentamu also reflected on the criticism he faced while in office, saying those moments tested and ultimately strengthened him. He added that such challenges are necessary, as they help build resilience, character, and stronger institutions.
