In an effort to make sanitary pads affordable, the government has scrapped all taxes on sanitary pads.

Scrapping taxes is expected to lead to reduction in prices of pads, which the government hopes will make them more affordable especially to girls in rural areas.

The move comes at a time when there is a growing public discontent over the government’s failure to honour its presidential campaign pledge of providing free sanitary pads to girls.

The announcement of government’s failure to honour the pledge stirred Dr. Stella Nyanzi’s activism and mobilisation drive which has become a national issue.

The Ministry of Education also revealed that the campaign pledge will be honoured when the government has the funds to realise the goal.

Lack of pads has been highlighted as one of the major causes of girls in rural areas dropping out of school.
