Ugandans have defended YMCA student Brian Isiko who was sentenced to two years in jail for hitting on Kabarole Woman MP, Sylvia Rwabwogo.

Isiko repeatedly sent the MP suggestive and love advance messages on social media and when she blocked him, he resorted to texting her directly.

“I love you so much and want to protect you. My love is for you alone and since there is no one taking care of you, I will do it,” read one of the messages to the MP.

For such messages, the 25-year-old was found guilty of cyber harassment and offensive communication by Justice Gladys Kamasanyu of Buganda Road Court, a ruling that has angered Ugandans.

Don Wanyama, the presidential press secretary wondered in a Facebook post, if the ruling could have been different if the woman involved was say, a teacher or nurse.

“A young man who hit on this Kabarole Woman MP will stay in jail for two years, court has ruled. Just wondering if the sentence would have been different if say, she was a teacher, nurse.”

Duncan Abigaba, the manager of the Government Citizen Interaction Centre (GCIC) argued that the sentence breeds discrimination and promotes social classes.

Not even fellow women spared the “childish” MP.
