A boda-boda cyclist who was shot by the police at JEEMA’s candidate in Bugiri’s by-election, Asuman Basalirwa’s rally has died.

24-year-old Ramathan Walyendo, a die-hard of Basalirwa was caught by a bullet in the chest yesterday as police tried to stop the candidate from holding a rally at Busoga university grounds.

He was rushed to Bugiri hospital where he has died from over bleeding according to medics in the hospital.

Walyendo was a regular at Jobless Corner stage in Bugiri Municipality.

Asuman Basalirwa has repeatedly accused the police of conniving with his opponents to harass his supporters, deface his posters among other electoral crimes but the Electoral Commission has yet to conduct any investigations or penalise any parties.

“I am going to follow up this matter till the end. I have repeatedly complained of unfair treatment and harassment of my supporters but you know the drill. I am not going to let this one pass,” he said.

In his defence, James Mubi, the police’s mouthpiece in Busoga region said Basalirwa’s supporters of being rowdy and provoking police with stones and insults.

He, however, said that investigations into the shooting of Walyendo were on-going.

The hotly contested Bugiri by-election is slated for July 27.
