The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved the prosecution of Uganda’s Ambassador  to Burundi, Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, over assault of a female traffic officer, Sergeant Esther Namaganda, some three weeks ago in Mukono.

A reliable police source confirmed to Matooke Republic earlier this morning that the DPP has sanctioned the case file that was submitted by the Police. The only thing left is for the prosecutor to ask court to issue criminal summons to the diplomat.

The controversial bush war veteran, together with his body guards Peter Bushindiki and John Robert Okurut, are to be charged with criminal assault and torture, as well as obstructing a police officer from carrying out her duties.

It might be remembered that while speaking at an international Conference for ministers in charge of refugees from the Great Lakes Region at Speke Resort about ten days ago , President Museveni condemned the controversial incident that involved Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza, describing it as totally intolerable.

“Recently, we had one retired General slapping a Police woman and the whole population was up in arms. It is a big issue.  That General is facing the law because you are not allowed to slap, not even to bark at, people,” the president said

President Museveni further said:

“If you’re angry and aggressive, you can ask for permission  and we deploy in Somalia, where your services of aggressiveness are needed. You cannot bark at women or children,” Museveni said

However, Maj. Gen Kyaligonza has denied assaulting the traffic officer and says he can’t be held responsible for the indiscretions of his bodyguards.
