The copyright law in Uganda is one that the creative industry has always rallied upon stakeholders to enforce and ensure that art creators get the worth of their craft.
Latest to rally lawmakers and enforcers to see this law take serious effect is the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rebecca Kadaga. She took to Twitter to applaud the film, “Kony: Order From Above” and reminded the concerned parties to ensure that the rights of such creative art are protected.
“Creations like the film ‘Kony: Order From Above’ are the reasons the Minister of Justice should act on the long-awaited demand from the industry to ensure the protection of the inventions of the people of Uganda under the Copyrights and Neighbourhood Rights Act,” Kadaga tweeted.
Many Ugandan creatives have their art plagiarized or consumed without consumers paying for the worth of this art and it has been a common case in areas such as movies and music.
Drives by collecting societies such as Uganda Performing Rights Societies to arrest and reprimand the abusers of the copyright law have always been in vain.
If the copyright law is enforced as required of the industry, it would increase chances of creatives making more returns off their craft in royalties.
